How I Finally Stopped Letting Uncertainty Control My Anxiety

How I Finally Stopped Letting Uncertainty Control My Anxiety

For most of my life, uncertainty terrified me.

If I didn’t know what was going to happen, my mind filled in the blanks with worst-case scenarios:

  • "What if I fail?"
  • "What if something bad happens?"
  • "What if I make the wrong decision?"

I thought if I could just plan perfectly or analyze enough, I could feel safe. But the truth is: no amount of planning can erase uncertainty.

It was only when I learned to embrace uncertainty that my anxiety finally started to ease. And it’s now one of my favorite lessons from my Dogs Against Anxiety CBT Cards.

Why Uncertainty Feeds Anxiety

Anxiety loves certainty. It craves predictability. But life is full of things we can’t control:

  • Other people’s opinions
  • Job outcomes
  • Relationships
  • Health situations
  • The future in general

When your brain senses uncertainty, it activates the "threat detection" system — scanning for possible dangers, running endless what-if scenarios, and amplifying fear.

This is called intolerance of uncertainty — a major driver of generalized anxiety, health anxiety, OCD, and panic attacks.

How CBT Helps You Tolerate Uncertainty

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) teaches us that the goal isn’t to eliminate uncertainty — it’s to get better at living with it.

Instead of constantly trying to predict or control outcomes, CBT teaches you to say:

"I don’t know — and that’s okay."

This mindset builds uncertainty tolerance — the skill of allowing unknowns to exist without spiraling into anxiety.

How I Practice the 'Embrace Uncertainty' Exercise

When I catch myself obsessing over unknown outcomes, I pull out my Dogs Against Anxiety CBT Cards and read my card:

Then I walk myself through this simple CBT framework:

Step 1 — Acknowledge The Uncertainty

I name what I don’t know:

Example: "I don’t know if the job interview will go well."

Step 2 — Accept That Control Is Limited

I remind myself:

  • "I’ve done what I can to prepare."
  • "I cannot control the outcome."
  • "Uncertainty is part of life."

Step 3 — Redirect My Focus

Instead of obsessing over "what if," I shift my attention to:

  • What I can control right now (my actions, my preparation, my self-care)
  • Practicing grounding exercises (like breathing or sensory focus)
  • Allowing the discomfort without feeding it

Why This Approach Works

The more you avoid uncertainty, the bigger your anxiety becomes. But when you face uncertainty directly and allow it to exist, your brain learns:

  • Uncertainty doesn’t automatically mean danger
  • I can feel uncertain and still be okay
  • Uncertainty is uncomfortable — but survivable

Over time, this reduces your anxiety sensitivity and breaks the fear cycle [Boswell et al., 2013].

Real-Life Times I Use This Technique

Here are common situations where embracing uncertainty helps me:

  • Waiting for medical test results
  • Before job interviews or important decisions
  • During relationship conflicts
  • When facing financial unknowns
  • While dealing with health anxiety symptoms

Instead of falling into the "I need to know" trap, I practice sitting with "I don’t know, and I’ll handle whatever happens."

Why We Fear Uncertainty So Much

As humans, our brains are wired to prefer predictability. We mistakenly believe that "if I know for sure, I’ll feel safe."

But life is full of unknowns. The real safety comes from knowing:

  • I can’t predict everything.
  • I won’t like every outcome.
  • And I’ll survive whatever happens.

This is true resilience — and it's one of the most powerful skills CBT can give you.
